Terri Ford:
Pastel Workshop
Studio and Plein Air - Underpainting for a Fresh Finish

August 26-28, 2011

WORKSHOP CONCEPT:
Keeping a painting “fresh” is of primary importance to Distinguished Pastellist Terri Ford Her under-paintings are designed to establish strong value patterns and composition, capturing the essentials in lighting conditions that can quickly change. In this workshop Terri will demonstrate numerous approaches to under-painting detailing the choices to employ one approach over another in any given painting. Ford then demonstrate how she proceeds with the painting using layers of pastel applied with varying pressure and marks to create different conditions and texture. Terri will discuss color choices, application of the pastel in the final stages and “knowing when to stop”. Her intention in painting is to keep it vibrant & fresh, and avoid the pitfalls of overworking. Terri’s individual attention to students is generous and patient. She is an accessible instructor with a vibrant and positive nature.

WORKSHOP ITINERARY:
Day 1 will be the longest demo time due to the variations to be shared. She will demonstrate and take questions until lunch. Students will then work the remainder of the day with Terri coaching as they paint.

Days 2 & 3 will be brief demonstrations. Students can then have more individual painting time, and mentoring from Terri.

Painting on Day 3 will end in time for a final critique/discussion of work done during the workshop.
