FRED COGELOW: SCULPTURE IN WOOD MEZZO-RELIEF WORKSHOP JUNE 6-10, 2011 ![]() ![]() CLASS DESCRIPTION: This five day workshop will explore the creation of a ¾ Profile Portraiture in Mezzo-Relief and is designed for an advanced carver/sculptor. Participants will complete two portraits in a scale that measures the heads approximately 2.5” high. Mezzo- (or “middle”) relief offers challenges and rewards found in neither bas- or deep-relief. As with the other relief forms, the line composition is the single most important factor. This workshop reveals two basic approaches to rendering portraits in a ¾ profile. The first is a traditional method of blocking out the area for the head, establishing the top of the sternum or the front center to the collar, determining the center line to the face from that and proceeding by proportion. The second stays true to following the lines of the design or photo and involves engineering back-up. Skill level of moderate to advanced is suggested, or at least an appreciation of anatomy, detail, and engineering. This is the last workshop that Fred will be teaching until 2014. BIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION: Fred Cogelow {aka: “fredgelow somebody”} Fred Cogelow is considered by many to be the greatest wood sculptor working in the United States. A self-taught reductive carver, Fred has been winning awards and honors throughout the Midwest and across the country since 1983. Establishing himself as portrait sculptor (and incredible storyteller) his work is included in private collections in Norway, Sweden, South Africa, and across the U.S. His work has exhibited at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, Perth Wood Show in Perth, Australia the Minnesota State Historical Society, and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. His resume boasts seven collaborations, four publications, numerous innovations in carving tool design and has served as featured artist, commentator, and judge at events throughout the country. But Fred tells his own story best: My first endeavor in reductive sculpture was an assignment to carve a Scotty dog out of Ivory soap in third grade. Attempting to develop excessive detail with a dull table knife, one of the legs was broken. The teacher, responding to a polite inquiry as to the possibility of mending, confiscated both dog and implement, exclaiming, “It’s obvious you’ll never be a carver!” |
