Maquoketa
Art Experience is working to revitalize downtown
Maquoketa, Iowa by supporting the development
of a thriving
arts
community.
Maquoketa Art Experience (MAE) is a non-profit organization working to turn downtown storefronts into studios, galleries, and workshop spaces for visiting and resident artists. Our exhibition space at 124 S. Main St is designed to house thematic shows that will be created in collaboration with visiting, regional, and resident artists. Hours are 2-8pm Thursday and Friday, 12-5pm Sturday and Sunday. Accomplished artists are invited to apply for residencies. Short-term residencies can last for one week to a year, with MAE offering partially to fully funded storefronts and raw second story spaces to select artists. Support for permanent residency is also considered. Thomas Metcalf is the first MAE sponsored fulltime resident artist. His critically renowned intricate paintings employ a Northern Renaissance glazing technique to achieve a glowing realism. In order to maintain a full time studio and live in Maquoketa, Metcalf purchased a building on Main St. with the support of MAE. Charles Morris and Rose Frantzen, husband and wife artists, whose work is shown at their gallery in Maquoketa's Old City Hall, are highly accomplished painters who helped to initiate Maquoketa Art Experience. Frantzen's "Portrait of Maquoketa", 180 portraits of Maquoketans painted from life, is being shown at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery from November 6, 2009 through July 5, 2010. Morris has recently launched ArtStyleGenerator.com, which offers an exploration of art styles that Morris features in his workshops.
